Wigan Metropolitan Borough Council

Outcome of Expression of Interest: Not shortlisted

We are looking to set up a ‘mini IOT town’ within an area of the borough, to demonstrate the impact of sensor tech and evaluate if this technology can provide wider offering to the council.   The outcomes which we are hoping to achieve are;

  • Reduce mileage
  • Avoid duplication
  • Remove non-essential tasks, ensure we are delivering things which are needed, not just because of routine
  • Improved data analytics
  • Reduce anti social behaviour
  • Reduce materials costs

We would do this by creating an IOT Network across the borough, in which we can implement sensor technology. The sensors which will help to establish and re-evaluate our existing routine processes to actually identify options around creating efficiencies; at present we duplicate many routine tasks with unknown requirements, we empty bins when they are not full, we grit roads based on a single overall temperature for the borough which can result in spreading grit when not needed.

We will focus on the following services

  • Waste Management
  • Road Potholes
  • Winter Gritting – Temperature Alerts
  • Cemetery Monitoring
  • Empty let properties – Security/Alarm management

This phase will deliver

  • Cost/benefits review
  • Mini IOT Network
  • Full POC and solution analysis
  • Outline future service delivery model & potential savings
  • Outline full business case
  • Introduction to service design
  • Introduction to delivery management
  • Introduction to digital business analysis
  • Agile for teams
